Punjab to ban hidden-camera devices, including pens, glasses and watches

The Punjab government has decided to ban items fitted with hidden cameras and recording devices, including pens, eyeglasses and watches, citing concerns over privacy and the misuse of such equipment.

Punjab Home Department said on Monday that the move aims to protect citizens’ personal information, particularly that of women and children. It warned that the use, purchase and sale of spying and covert electronic devices will invite strict legal action.

The department added that it had received complaints about such devices being used for illegal surveillance, harassment and blackmail. It also warned that the illegal use of objects fitted with hidden cameras will carry severe penalties.

Punjab Home Secretary Ahmad Javed Qazi told a private media outlet that the government will issue a formal notification to implement the ban within a few days. He explained that the announcement came ahead of the notification to give people time to dispose of the items.

The decision comes as the Lahore High Court (LHC) hears a public interest petition challenging the unregulated import and sale of smart glasses equipped with cameras and microphones. The petition raises concerns over privacy, personal dignity and national security.

Meta has faced criticism over its AI-powered smart glasses, with critics referring to the devices as “pervert glasses”. Although the company has not officially listed Pakistan as a market, the petitioner’s counsel told the court that the glasses are openly available online and in shops in Lahore.

On Thursday, the LHC directed the federal government to forward a summary to the federal cabinet concerning the unregulated import and sale of smart glasses.
