Prime Minister (PM) Shehbaz Sharif has said that the imposition of governor’s rule and emergency in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) was undertaken “under extreme compulsion” as he chaired a provincial apex committee meeting in Peshawar to review the security situation.
Shehbaz arrived in Peshawar on Thursday for his first visit to the province since governor’s rule and the emergency were imposed on October 11.
Chief of Defence Forces (CDF) Field Marshal Asim Munir, KP Governor Faisal Karim Kundi, federal ministers and newly appointed provincial advisers attended the meeting.
Addressing the participants, the prime minister described KP as a beautiful province and expressed hope that the government would accelerate development in the region.
“I hope we work hard day and night and speedily make progress towards development and prosperity,” he said.
Shehbaz also criticised Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) over the province’s worsening security situation, saying that Khyber Pakhtunkhwa had become a “cradle of peace” six years ago.
The meeting was convened to review the security situation in the province following the imposition of governor’s rule and the emergency.
