US issues security alerts across Middle East amid ‘Iran, Houthi threats’

Several United States (US) embassies across the Middle East have issued identical security advisories for American citizens, warning of potential threats linked to Iran and Yemen’s Houthi group, an international media outlet has reported.

The advisories warned that Iran and groups aligned with it could target US interests overseas, including American businesses and institutions.

“Iran and groups supportive of Iran may target other US interests overseas or at locations associated with the United States and Americans throughout the world, including US businesses and other institutions,” the advisory said.

The notices also urged American citizens to remain alert to possible travel disruptions, including flight cancellations and airspace closures and to exercise heightened vigilance amid the security situation.

The advisory warned that ongoing Houthi attacks against Saudi Arabia could cause the conflict to “escalate rapidly beyond that immediate area”.

The warning covers 12 countries in the Middle East, including the Gulf Arab states, Jordan, Iraq, Syria, Lebanon, Israel, Yemen and Iran.

The alerts come as hostilities between the Houthis and the Saudi-led coalition supporting Yemen’s internationally recognised government continue to escalate.

In recent days, the coalition has carried out airstrikes against Houthi positions in Yemen, including in the capital, Sanaa. The Houthi group has threatened further attacks on Saudi oil facilities and other critical infrastructure.
